Description
This ultimate patty melt recipe combines a juicy beef patty, perfectly caramelized onions, and melty cheese between buttery, crispy bread. It’s a diner classic that’s easy to make at home and packed with flavor!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 4 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar)
- 8 slices rye bread (or sourdough)
- 4 tbsp butter (for grilling)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder
Instructions
- Heat butter and olive oil in a pan, add sliced onions, and cook on low heat for 15-20 minutes until caramelized. Set aside.
- Mix ground beef with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Form into 4 oval patties slightly larger than your bread slices.
- Cook patties over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
- Butter one side of each bread slice. Place a slice butter-side down in a skillet, then layer with cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with a second slice of bread (butter-side up).
- Cook over medium heat for 3-4 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted.
- Let the sandwiches rest for a minute before slicing. Serve hot with your favorite sides!
Notes
- For extra crunch, sprinkle Parmesan on the buttered bread before grilling.
- Use a mix of Swiss and cheddar for the best balance of flavor.
- For a healthier option, use whole wheat bread and lean ground beef.
