Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¼ cups (270g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (110g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • ¾ cup (200g) sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • ¼ cup (30g) vegetable oil
  • 1 ¼ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • ½1 teaspoon red gel food coloring

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • ½ cup (100g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¼ cup (50g) full-fat cream cheese
  • 1 ½ cups (180g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8.5 x 4.5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper.
  • Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Cream butter & sugar: Beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing after each addition.
  • Combine wet ingredients: Add sour cream, oil, and vanilla extract, then mix in the dry ingredients gradually.
  • Make the red velvet batter: Remove half of the batter and mix in cocoa powder, vinegar, and red food coloring.
  • Layer & swirl: Spoon both batters alternately into the pan and use a knife to swirl.
  • Bake for 55-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool.
  • Make frosting: Beat butter, then add cream cheese and vanilla. Gradually mix in powdered sugar until smooth.
  • Frost and serve: Once the cake has cooled, spread the frosting on top and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use room temperature ingredients for the best texture.
  • Do not overmix to keep the loaf soft and fluffy.
  • Adjust red food coloring for a deeper shade.
