For the Cake:
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
- ¾ cup (75g) black cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1½ teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk, room temperature
- ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs, room temperature
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup (240ml) hot coffee
For the Black Fudge Frosting:
- 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (100g) black cocoa powder
- 4 cups (480g) powdered sugar
- 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Cake:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Mix on medium speed until smooth.
- Reduce speed to low and slowly add hot coffee. Mix until fully combined.
- Divide batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes. Cool completely on wire racks.
- Prepare the Frosting:
- Melt butter with salt in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Remove from heat and whisk in cocoa powder.
- Alternately add powdered sugar and heavy cream, whisking until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract and let cool to room temperature.
- Assemble the Cake:
- Place one cooled cake layer on a serving plate. Spread frosting evenly over the top.
- Repeat with remaining layers, then frost the sides and top of the cake. Smooth with a spatula for a clean finish.
Notes
- Use high-quality black cocoa powder for the best flavor and color.
- If you don’t have buttermilk, substitute with milk and 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice.
- Hot coffee enhances the chocolate flavor but can be replaced with hot water if preferred.
