Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup (75g) black cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk, room temperature
  • ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) hot coffee

For the Black Fudge Frosting:

  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (100g) black cocoa powder
  • 4 cups (480g) powdered sugar
  • 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cake:
    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
    • Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Mix on medium speed until smooth.
    • Reduce speed to low and slowly add hot coffee. Mix until fully combined.
    • Divide batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes. Cool completely on wire racks.
  • Prepare the Frosting:
    • Melt butter with salt in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Remove from heat and whisk in cocoa powder.
    • Alternately add powdered sugar and heavy cream, whisking until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract and let cool to room temperature.
  • Assemble the Cake:
    • Place one cooled cake layer on a serving plate. Spread frosting evenly over the top.
    • Repeat with remaining layers, then frost the sides and top of the cake. Smooth with a spatula for a clean finish.

Notes

  • Use high-quality black cocoa powder for the best flavor and color.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, substitute with milk and 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice.
  • Hot coffee enhances the chocolate flavor but can be replaced with hot water if preferred.
