Description
This homemade patty melt recipe combines juicy beef, caramelized onions, melted cheese, and crispy golden bread, all topped with a tangy secret sauce.
Ingredients
- For the Patty: 1 lb ground beef (80/20), 1 tsp salt, ½ tsp black pepper, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp onion powder
- For the Secret Sauce: ¼ cup mayonnaise, 1 tbsp ketchup, 1 tbsp finely diced pickles, 1 tsp Dijon mustard, ½ tsp garlic powder, ½ tsp onion powder, ½ tsp smoked paprika
- For the Sandwich: 8 slices rye or sourdough bread, 4 slices Swiss cheese, 4 slices cheddar cheese, 4 tbsp butter, 1 large onion (thinly sliced), 1 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a skillet, add onions, and cook for 15-20 minutes until caramelized.
- Mix secret sauce ingredients in a small bowl and set aside.
- Season ground beef and shape into 4 oval patties. Cook in a skillet for 3-4 minutes per side until browned.
- Spread secret sauce on bread slices. Layer cheddar cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, and top with another slice of bread.
- Butter the outside of each sandwich and grill over medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side until crispy and golden brown.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
- For extra crispiness, spread mayo instead of butter on the bread before grilling.
- Use sourdough or Texas toast as a substitute for rye bread.
- Let the secret sauce sit for 10 minutes for enhanced flavor.
