This creamy banana pudding is a classic Southern dessert made with layers of fresh bananas, vanilla wafers, and rich homemade custard. It’s easy to make and perfect for gatherings!

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Custard:
    • ¾ cup sugar
    • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
    • ¼ tsp salt
    • 2 cups whole milk
    • 4 large egg yolks
    • 2 tbsp butter
    • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • For Assembling:
    • 4 ripe bananas, sliced
    • 1 box (11 oz) vanilla wafers
    • 1 ½ cups whipped cream or whipped topping

Instructions

  • Make the Custard: In a saucepan, whisk sugar, flour, and salt. Gradually add milk and cook over medium heat until thickened.
  • Temper the Eggs: Whisk egg yolks separately, then slowly add a small amount of the hot milk mixture to them. Combine back into the saucepan and cook for 2-3 more minutes. Stir in butter and vanilla extract.
  • Assemble the Pudding: Layer vanilla wafers, banana slices, and warm custard in a serving dish. Repeat until all ingredients are used, finishing with custard on top.
  • Chill & Serve: Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving. Garnish with whipped cream and extra banana slices.

Notes

  • For firmer bananas, brush slices with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  • Use homemade whipped cream for a fresher taste.
  • Substitute vanilla wafers with graham crackers for a crunchier texture.
