This creamy banana pudding is a classic Southern dessert made with layers of fresh bananas, vanilla wafers, and rich homemade custard. It’s easy to make and perfect for gatherings!

- ¾ cup sugar
- ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ tsp salt
- 2 cups whole milk
- 4 large egg yolks
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- For Assembling:
- 4 ripe bananas, sliced
- 1 box (11 oz) vanilla wafers
- 1 ½ cups whipped cream or whipped topping
Instructions
- Make the Custard: In a saucepan, whisk sugar, flour, and salt. Gradually add milk and cook over medium heat until thickened.
- Temper the Eggs: Whisk egg yolks separately, then slowly add a small amount of the hot milk mixture to them. Combine back into the saucepan and cook for 2-3 more minutes. Stir in butter and vanilla extract.
- Assemble the Pudding: Layer vanilla wafers, banana slices, and warm custard in a serving dish. Repeat until all ingredients are used, finishing with custard on top.
- Chill & Serve: Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving. Garnish with whipped cream and extra banana slices.
Notes
- For firmer bananas, brush slices with lemon juice to prevent browning.
- Use homemade whipped cream for a fresher taste.
