Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Casserole:

    • 1 loaf French bread, cubed
    • 6 large eggs
    • 2 cups milk or half-and-half
    • ¼ cup maple syrup or honey
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 2 cups mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
  • For the Streusel Topping:

    • ½ cup butter, softened
    • ½ cup all-purpose flour
    • ½ cup brown sugar
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • For Serving (Optional):

    • Maple syrup
    • Powdered sugar
    • Whipped cream

Instructions

  • Prepare the Bread: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and spread the cubed bread evenly inside.
  • Make the Custard: In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, maple syrup, vanilla, and cinnamon.
  • Assemble the Casserole: Pour the custard over the bread, ensuring even coverage. Press the bread down to soak up the liquid. Sprinkle berries on top.
  • Refrigerate (Optional): Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
  • Make the Streusel: Mix butter, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon until crumbly.
  • Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Sprinkle streusel over the casserole and bake for 40-45 minutes, until golden and set.
  • Serve: Let cool for 5 minutes, then dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup. Enjoy warm!

Notes

  • Best when prepared the night before and baked fresh in the morning.
  • Use stale or slightly toasted bread to prevent sogginess.
  • Can be made dairy-free with almond or oat milk.
